Okay so you have went out and loaded up on all the latest tactical gear. You have your brand new M4 with a tactical scope, tactical lights, and whatever else you thought your new rifle needed to have on it. You are all decked out in your tactical pants, boots, and vest. You go out to the range every once in a while and you practice different shooting positions, rapid reloading, and maybe even some multiple target engagement. So I guess if you have done all this you must be a pretty tactical person right? You think you have done everything you need to do to be prepared in any situation that arises. Sure you are correct when it comes to the gear you have purchased and some of the training you have done. You need the gear and you need the training you have started. But you are forgetting one huge important thing. YOU ARE OUT OF SHAPE!
Being tactical is not 100% about the gear you own or being able to hit a target in different stationary positions. I will say again, these things are important but they are not everything. What are you going to do if you are in a situation where you need to be shooting on the run, or maybe you need to run for cover while you are taking fire. Do you think you could handle extended running while shooting? What if you had to traverse steep terrain with all your gear on you, do you think you could make it? Do you want to be the person gasping for breath or do you want to be the person coming out on top?
Being in shape is so important but for some reason so many people neglect it. Being in shape and trying to live just a little healthier will go a very long way. It will improve your shooting, it will allow you to train in different tactical drills and will allow you to train longer. And if something goes down it could give you an advantage over whatever you might be going up against.
So are you wondering what you need to do to get that extra edge and get in better shape? First thing you should do is start working out if you aren’t already. Start an exercise routine that fits into your daily schedule. Just about everyone out there should be able to fit 30 to 60 minutes of training into their daily routine. You can start by walking and jogging, maybe take the stairs instead of an elevator, do some push ups and sits up, but most importantly just be more active. One of the best methods to get in shape is to purchase one of those at home workout programs. You know you have seen them on TV and you know what I am talking about. A lot of people see these commercials and think it is just a big scam. The fact is some of these programs will push you to the limit and then push you some more. If you stick to the programs you will see major results. You can start off slow with them and if you stick with it you will be going full force in no time at all. I personally use the P90X program and although it can be a little cheesy at times it really does work.
Another important thing you need to do is be healthier. Getting in shape and working out is a great start but you need to get rid of some bad habits. If you smoke than you need to quit. I know it is easier said than done, but you have to at least give it a try. You can’t be doing tactical drills with a cigarette hanging out of your mouth, and the smoke might give away your location when trying to evade an enemy. Also try your best to eat better. I’m not telling you to get rid of all the junk food in your diet, (I know I sure haven’t) but at least try to cut some of it back. I go by the little bit of this and a little bit of that method. I still eat some of the junk food I love but I have also added a good amount of healthy food to my diet as well. A little balance in the diet will go a long way.
Now that you are getting in better shape you should take it to the field and start some more intense tactical training. Get some of your buddies together and start doing tactical drills with them. Practice two man buddy drills, suppressive fire, shooting on the run and so on. Training with others and doing more physical tactical drills will also go a long way towards getting in even better shape.
If you go through with anything we have talked about you will be in a better position to defend yourself if you ever had to. You will last longer in a fight and you will just feel better all around. Having good gear is definitely important but training and getting in better shape is as well. Take the time to prepare and you will be ready when the time to go gets here.
Like we mentioned above we really recommend the P90X home workout program. It will save you a lot of money over the cost of a gym membership and you truly will see better results. If you get the program just make sure you stick with it. If you haven’t worked out in a while the first few weeks will be hell, but if you stick with it you will end up thanking yourself.
